Pharrell Williams’s Think Tank

Tank Chair blackAs companies operate leaner and it becomes more necessary to work longer hours… How much time do you invest in choosing the perfect chair for your home or office? Consequently, if we’re going to be chained to a desk, why not be chained to something we want to sit in? What is a chair anyway besides a throne to inspire you to produce your best work? The multi-faceted musician/entrepreneur Pharrell Williams of N.E.R.D fame has continued building his brand as a creative individual by making another contribution to industrial design…giving us the ‘Tank Chair’. The chairs are from the designer’s second installment in the critically acclaimed “Perspective” series. Williams draws inspiration from military tanks and replaced the women’s legs in his first installment with tank wheels. The contemporary furniture pieces are featured in four colorways, (white, baby blue, black and pink) made with leather, luxurious velour and veal skin wrapped seats. The chairs are in exhibition at the Emmanuel Perrition Gallery during Art Basel Miami Beach. So next time you are in the War Room or at your desk waiting for divine inspiration think about what you are sitting in and what that means or says about you.

Jaks Inspire New Seating

jaksJaks are no longer the name of childhood game. It is now an innovative modular seating system designed by John Coleman for Allermuir. Jaks were specifically designed for Allermuir to be pieces that could stand alone or interlocked to create intriguing patterns. The new soft seating will be introduced at NeoCon East today. The cross shape design allows seating for four people or when arranged together to provide an area for netowrking. The cool addition of the squares can act as tables or footrests. These unique crosses would bring any social area alive.

John Coleman is a well know designer with plenty of experience under his belt. He graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1979 and started his own studio in 1981. Coleman’s studio mostly focuses on producing designs for the industry, but their design intent is to produce pieces that are “restrained, understated and timeless.”

The Sphere Bed

spherebedThe name may be a bit misleading but it speaks more to the experience on being in the bed. The designer Karim Rashid teams with Hollandia International to create the Sphere. Hollandia’s philosophy of  ”let’s stay in bed” guides all designs that they create. The Sphere utilizes an adjustable sleep system, which studies have shown are much better for people. I am sure that many people are thinking aren’t those kinds of bed only for elderly people. The short answer is NO. These kinds of beds reduce strain on your back and improve circulation. Anyways back to the design. The innovative design by Rashid is bound to attract attention and cause some double takes but that is what he is know for. The Sphere creates an unique environment in not only for you sleep but also evolves your your bedroom into a space of unknown wonders. Some features in the sphere are…  How do you say it? They are interesting. The champagne holder?!?! Well, for the bachelor pads and honeymoon suites, I can understand. But for ordinary clients, a more practical use for that space would be for books, remotes, or the occasional beer. Overall, the design is way cool. So whether you are looking to bring some whimzy into your bedroom or a clients, the Sphere bed by Hollandia is the bed for you.

This all weather, durable and stylish shelving unit brings a fresh look to any patio, where most usual shelving is quite boring and industrial. With the four colors that the units come in, they can accent or upgrade any area they are in. Sean Yoo, pictured below, is the designer of the Opus Incertum shelving units and before he was an industrial designer he was a city planner. His background in urban planning probably assited in the design of this piece, since it is inspired by the pavement discovered at Pompeii.
